Delete a footnote or an endnote

Note reference mark in document

Callout 1 Note reference mark

When you want to delete a note, you work with the note reference mark (note reference mark: A number, character, or combination of characters that indicates that additional information is contained in a footnote or endnote.) in the document window, not the text in the note. If you delete an automatically numbered note reference mark, Microsoft Word renumbers the notes in the new order.

  • In the document, select the note reference mark of the note you want to delete, and then press DELETE.

ShowTip

To delete all automatically numbered footnotes or endnotes, click Replace on the Edit menu. On the Replace tab, click More, click Special, and then click Endnote Mark or Footnote Mark. Make sure the Replace with box is empty, and then click Replace All. You cannot delete all custom footnote reference marks at one time.
