Gridlines show the cell (cell: A box formed by the intersection of a row and column in a worksheet or a table, in which you enter information.) boundaries of a table (table: One or more rows of cells commonly used to display numbers and other items for quick reference and analysis. Items in a table are organized into rows and columns.) on the screen wherever the table doesn't have borders applied. Unlike borders, gridlines appear only on the screen; they are not printed. If you turn off gridlines, the table is displayed exactly as it will be printed.

By default (default: A predefined setting. You can accept the default option settings, or you can change them to suit your own preferences.), all tables have black 1/2-point, single-line, solid-line borders that are printed. If you hide the gridlines in a table that has these (or any other) borders, you won't see the change wherever the gridlines are behind the borders. To view the gridlines, remove the borders.

 Note   Gridlines are never visible when you view a document in a Web browser (Web browser: Software that interprets HTML files, formats them into Web pages, and displays them. A Web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, can follow hyperlinks, transfer files, and play sound or video files that are embedded in Web pages.).

Display or hide table gridlines in a document

• On the Table menu, click Show Gridlines or Hide Gridlines.

Remove table borders

1. Do one of the following:
• To remove borders from the whole table   Click in the table and then, on the Table menu, point to Select, and then click Table.
• To remove borders from specified cells only   Click Show/Hide on the Standard toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, press ALT and then SHIFT+F10.), and then select the cells that you want, including their end-of-cell marks.

  

2. On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading, and then click the Borders tab.
3. Under Setting, click None.
