Open a file on a Web server or document library

Some of the content in this topic may not be applicable to some languages.

Note  To complete the following steps, you must have sufficient rights on the Web server to open the file. You must also know the Web address (URL) of the server with the file that you want to open. If you are working with SharePoint Products and Technologies, you must be a member of a site group with the View Items right. All default site groups include this right.

  1. In any Microsoft Office program, click File, then click Open.
  2. In the Filename field, type in the URL of the server and the path to the file that you would like to open, and then click Open. You can enter an Internet address (such as www.example.com) or an intranet address (such as http://example).

Notes

  • If the Web server you are working with is running Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies, instead of folders you will see a list of document libraries from the site. This makes it much easier to find and work with files in the site.
  • After you have successfully opened a file on the Web server, a shortcut to the Web server is created in your My Network Places folder. You can then use this shortcut to more conveniently open files on the Web server.
