I am having problems with the passwords for my packaged presentation

Symptoms

You set passwords for an individual presentation, but then find that those passwords are no longer accepted when the presentation is packaged for CD. Or you set passwords for presentations when you package them for CD, but then find that one or more of the packaged presentations will not accept the passwords that you set.

Cause

Passwords can be set for presentations in two different ways and at two different times:

  • For an individual, unpackaged presentation at any time (by clicking Options on the Tools menu, and then specifying the passwords on the Security tab)
  • For one or more presentations at the point when they are being packaged for CD (by clicking the Options button in the Package for CD dialog box, and then specifying the passwords in the Options dialog box)

If any of the files that you are packaging already have passwords assigned, PowerPoint asks whether to keep the previously assigned passwords for those files or to override them. If you choose to override the previously assigned passwords, they are no longer accepted for the packaged versions of the files. However, they are still accepted for the original versions.

Resolution

Ensure that you are using the correct passwords for the version that you are trying to open or modify. If you cannot identify the correct passwords for a packaged version, but have access to the original version, you can repackage the original version either with new passwords or with no passwords.

Note  Microsoft cannot provide assistance for opening or modifying a presentation whose password you don't remember.
