Add a map to a slide

There are three primary ways to add a map to a slide:

  • You can use clip art that represents a specific country, state, or region.
  • You can insert a detailed, geographically accurate map generated automatically from MapPoint.
  • You can create a custom road or metro map in Visio and copy and paste it into PowerPoint. If you are connected to the Internet, you can also download and customize regional map templates in Visio.

ShowFind and use clip art maps

  1. Display the slide where you want to insert the map, and then on the Insert menu, point to Picture and then click Clip Art.
  2. Search for Maps in the Clip Art pane, or, if you want a specific state or region, type the name in the search box, such as Washington. If you are connected to the Internet, click Clip Art on Office Online and then search the Clip Art and Media center for a much larger selection of free downloadable images.

ShowUse a MapPoint map

  1. Display the slide where you want to insert the map, and then on the Insert menu, click MapPoint map.

After the map appears on your slide, you can right-click it to work with basic commands, such as Zoom. Or, work on the map in the MapPoint program, and consult MapPoint help, by right-clicking the map on the slide, pointing to Map Object, and then clicking Open.

ShowUse a Visio map

Create a directional map

  1. Point to Start, then to All Programs, then to Microsoft Office, and then click Microsoft Office Visio to open the Visio program.
  2. In the Choose Drawing Type dialog box, under Category, click Map, and then double-click the template you want to use.
  3. Save the new drawing file and then modify it as needed, and then copy the map onto your PowerPoint slide.

Download and modify a regional map

  1. Point to Start, then to All Programs, then to Microsoft Office, and then click Microsoft Office Visio to open the Visio program.
  2. In the Choose Drawing Type dialog box, in the New Drawing pane at the right of the program window, under Templates, in the Search online for box, type maps, and then click Go.
  3. Click the name of the map you want to use, and then click the Download button.
  4. Save the new drawing file and modify it as needed, and then copy the map onto your PowerPoint slide.

Tip  You can also create a directional map or create a 3-D directional map to add to your slide.
