Sometimes when you select languages on the Microsoft Office Language Settings 2007 Editing Languages tab, the phrase (limited support) appears after the language name.

What does limited support mean?

In 2007 Microsoft Office system (limited support) means that the language options for that language are turned on but the keyboard layout for that language has not been installed in the Windows operating system.

If you want to use the same keyboard layout for all enabled languages, you can safely ignore the (limited support) message for your languages. If you want to use a keyboard layout for a language that has (limited support), you must enable the keyboard layout for that language.

 Note   You can type and edit text in any language, including those marked as (limited support), by inserting symbols or using Unicode character codes. For information about inserting symbols and Unicode character codes in the 2007 Office release programs, see Insert a symbol or special character.

There are three situations when you might see (limited support):

1. The keyboard layout for the selected language has not been enabled in the Windows operating system. For example, if you see Spanish (limited support), it means that the Spanish keys for typing Spanish characters, such as the Ñ and ¿, are not enabled in Windows.
2. The 2007 Office release supports the selected language, but the Windows operating system does not have a keyboard to enable. For example, the 2007 Office release supports the Cherokee, Edo, and Fulfulde languages, but Windows does not. If you enable one of these languages, it shows (limited support).
3. For people using Windows XP, support files for East Asian and Complex Script languages might not be installed. Therefore, the keyboard layouts for these languages cannot be enabled.
