Applying a design to all of the slides in your
presentations is easy when you use slide masters (slide master: The slide that stores information about the design template applied, including font styles, placeholder sizes and positions, background design, and color schemes.).
You can apply one or more customized slide masters to a new presentation or an
existing presentation. Likewise, in the presentation that is associated with a newly customized slide master, you can add blank slides (and then add content later), move slides that contain content into your presentation from other presentations, or import slides from a Slide Library.
To create and customize a slide master, see Create, customize, and apply a slide master.
What do you want to do
Apply one or more slide masters to a new or different presentation
- Open both the presentation that contains the slide master that you want to copy and the presentation that you will paste the slide master to.
- In the presentation that contains the slide master that you want to copy, on the View menu, in the Presentation Views group, click Slide Master.
- In the slide thumbnail (thumbnail: A miniature representation of a picture.)
pane, right-click the slide master that you want to copy, and then click Copy on the shortcut menu.
Notes
- In the slide thumbnail pane, the slide master represents the larger slide image, and the associated layouts are positioned beneath it.
- Many presentations contain more than one slide master, so you may have to scroll to find the one that you want.
This list of slide layout thumbnails contains one slide master and two layouts.
- On the View tab, in the Window group, click Switch Windows, and then select the presentation that you want to paste the slide master to.
- In the presentation that you want to paste the slide master to, on the View menu, in the Presentation Views group, click Slide Master.
- In the slide thumbnail pane, click the location where you want the slide master to reside, and then do one of the following:
- If the destination presentation contains a blank slide master, select the blank slide master.
- If the destination presentation contains one or more customized slide masters, scroll to the bottom where the last layout resides, click below it, and then paste the slide master.
- Right-click the slide master, and then click Paste on the shortcut menu.
- To apply additional slide masters, follow steps 1 through 7.
- On the Slide Master tab, in the Close group, click Close Master View.

Apply a slide master to slides that you copy and paste from another presentation
By default, when you paste a slide into a different presentation that has a slide master applied to it, the slide inherits the formatting of the slide master. If there is more than one slide master applied to the destination presentation, the pasted slide inherits the formatting of the slide that precedes it.
When you copy and paste slides between presentations that use different slide masters, you can specify which slide master that you want the slide to follow when you paste it into the destination presentation. To prevent the pasted slide from inheriting the formatting of the slide that precedes it, click
Paste Options
, which appears when you paste
the slide.
When you paste a slide into a
presentation that is based on a slide master that is different from what the pasted slide is based on, and you decide to keep the keep the formatting from the original presentation, Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 adds another slide master to the destination presentation.
As a result, there are multiple slide masters associated with the destination presentation.
