When you open a Microsoft Office Excel 2003 workbook, a Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 presentation, or a Microsoft Office Word 2003 document, you may be prompted to grant permission for ActiveX controls (ActiveX control: A control, such as a check box or button that offers options to users or runs macros or scripts that automate a task. You can write macros for the control in Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications or scripts in Microsoft Script Editor.) to be loaded or to permit the controls to keep data saved for use at a later time. Some ActiveX controls may not be loaded at all.

Additionally, when you import a Microsoft Office 2003 file that contains ActiveX controls to another program, such as a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site, you may receive a warning message that the ActiveX controls might be unsafe. If you click Cancel, the ActiveX controls will not be loaded. If you click OK, the ActiveX controls will be loaded.

This message can appear when you try to open a file that contains ActiveX controls that are marked as Unsafe for Initialization (UFI). By default, Office 2003 does not load or activate ActiveX controls that are not marked as Safe for Initialization (SFI). This also applies to the ActiveX controls that are included with Office 2003.
