Turn on or off Overtype (OVR) mode

Applies to
Microsoft Office Outlook® 2003
Microsoft Office Excel 2003
Microsoft Office Word 2003

When you are editing text in Overtype mode, you are typing new characters over the existing characters. In Word and Excel, if Overtype mode is turned on, OVR appears on the status bar (status bar: A horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen that displays information about the current condition of the program, such as the status of items in the window, the progress of the current task, or information about the selected item.). In Outlook, OVR does not appear.

To insert characters into existing text instead of overtyping that text, you must first turn off Overtype mode.

Turn on or off Overtype

  • Press INSERT or INS to turn Overtype mode on or off.

Notes

  • In Excel, you must double-click a cell or press F2 to turn Overtype mode on or off. Also, the Edit directly in cell check box must be selected (it is selected by default). To select or clear this check box, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Edit tab.
  • In Word, you can double-click OVR on the status bar to turn Overtype mode on or off. Or, on the Tools menu, click Options, click the Edit tab, and then select or clear the Overtype mode check box.
