Customizing SharePoint site navigation using FrontPage 2003

Applies to
Microsoft Office FrontPage® 2003
Microsoft Windows® SharePoint® Services technology

A Web site's navigation structure helps site users to know where they are within the site and lets them move from one page to another by using hyperlinks.

Team sites based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services have a built-in navigation structure with which users can orient themselves within the site and find the content that they need. However, by opening your SharePoint site in Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003, you can use the navigation-editing features of FrontPage to customize and extend the built-in navigation to match your workgroup's needs.

ShowAbout link bars

A link bar is a set of hyperlinks that enable site visitors to navigate among the pages in your Web site. By placing link bars in prominent and consistent locations on each page you can provide easy access to the key pages in your site.

In FrontPage, link bars are identified in the Navigation pane and in Navigation view by the link bar icon: Link Bar icon. In Page view, link bars are regions of the page that include + add link commands.

Quick Launch bar

Most pages in a SharePoint site share a common top link bar. By default, the top link bar has links to the following pages:

  • Your site's Home page.
  • The Documents and Lists page, which shows all the libraries, lists, discussion boards, and surveys in the Web site.
  • The Create page, where users can create new lists and libraries.
  • The Site Settings page, where users can manage site settings or update personal information.
  • The Windows SharePoint Services online help.

Although we do not recommend that you remove or rearrange the default links on the top link bar, you can use the procedures described in this article to add other links to this link bar or to customize it in other ways.

The Quick Launch area on the default Home page of SharePoint sites includes the following link bars:

  • The Documents link bar has links to document libraries in the site.
  • The Pictures link bar has links to picture libraries in the site.
  • The Lists link bar has links to lists in the site.
  • The Discussions link bar has links to threaded discussions in the site.
  • The Surveys link bar has links to surveys in the site.

You can use the procedures described in this article to change these link bars.

ShowAbout changing navigation in FrontPage

In FrontPage, you can change a site's navigation (including the link bars) by using the Navigation pane and Navigation view.

The Navigation pane is useful for displaying your site’s navigational structure while you edit Web pages. While editing a page, you can open the Navigation pane by clicking Navigation Pane on the View menu. Use the Navigation pane to reorder items in a link bar or to rename or delete pages from the link bars. For more information, see the "Changing your SharePoint site's navigation" section.

The Navigation pane

The Navigation view displays your site's navigation structure in a large window. You can change the way you view the structure by zooming in and out and rotating the view from landscape to portrait orientation to customize the view for your site. You can use Navigation view to build additional pages into your SharePoint site. The pages are incorporated into the site's navigation structure as you add them. By using Navigation view and Folder List together, you can drag pages onto link bars or into your site’s structure. For more information, see the "Changing your SharePoint site's navigation" section.
