Limitations on Office update scans

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer version 1.2.1 can only scan for Office updates on a local machine. Office updates will not be detected in remote machine scans. Office update scan will be performed against Office products visible to the currently logged on user (administrator) running MBSA, and will list the updates that are missing for that particular user only. This includes versions of Office installed for that particular user, as well as versions of Office installed for all users on a local machine.

Office update scans detect more than just Security Updates

The Office update scan in MBSA 1.2.1 detects all updates that are detected by the Office Update detection website. This includes security updates, Service Packs, as well as other critical Office updates that are not related to security issues.

If required updates are offered for products that you don't think are installed...

If a suite product such as Office 2000 Professional is installed, updates that apply to the suite will be detected as required as long as parts of the product (FrontPage 2000, for example) is still installed on the machine.
