Add clip art to a Visio chart

Applies to
Microsoft Office Visio® 2003

Whether you're creating a simple diagram or a complex organization chart, there's always room to add some color and character to your Microsoft Office Visio® 2003 file with clip art. Adding clip art to a Visio diagram is a new capability that lets you add photos or clip art to each position in an organization chart. This is a great way to personalize a diagram of your company's structure.

Display the right toolbars

The Picture, Drawing, and Organization Chart toolbars make it easy to resize, customize, and align your clips. To display these toolbars, on the View menu, point to Toolbars and then select each one individually. Repeat until all three toolbars are displayed.

Adding, resizing, and positioning clips

The Clip Art task pane makes searching for clips simple because it lets you search the Clip Art and Media site on Office Online, right from within Visio. When you see a clip you like on the site, you can simply click the clip and drag it into your Visio file.

To see the Clip Art task pane, on the Insert menu, point to Picture and then click Clip Art.

After you select a clip and drag it into your Visio drawing page, you might need to resize it.

To resize a clip in Visio

  1. Select the clip.
  2. Move your mouse pointer over one of the green boxes on the edge of the clip.
  3. Click and drag the clip to your desired size.

Note   To resize a clip proportionally, click one of the boxes at a corner. Resizing by clicking one of the side points causes the clip to grow or shrink disproportionately.

After the clip has been resized, you can position it inside a shape. The easiest way to place a shape on the drawing page is to select a stencil from the Shapes window on the left side of the screen.

To position a clip

  1. In the Shapes pane, click and drag a shape onto your drawing page.
  2. Resize the shape to accommodate your clip by clicking and dragging one of the green boxes on the edge of the shape.
  3. After the shape is sized correctly, drag your clip over to the shape and place it inside.

Add a photo from a file, camera, or scanner

Rather than adding clip art, another approach is to use a photo of each person in the organization chart. In this case, you need to have those images on your computer. A digital camera makes this simple by allowing you to take the pictures and save them on your hard disk drive. You can also have people bring their own photos, and you can scan them yourself.

To do this, you can use a similar procedure to the one you used to add clip art. On the Insert menu, point to Picture and then click either From file… or From Scanner or Camera…. For more information, see Insert a picture.
