Faxing: Use Document Imaging to convert unsupported file types

The fax services feature in Microsoft Office 2003 supports file types it can convert to a .TIF (image) file such as the familiar Office file extensions like .doc, .ppt, .xls, .cvs, and a set of graphic extension supported by Microsoft Office Word 2003 such as .jpg, .bmp., .png.

If you can open an unsupported file type in an Office product, such as a PDF, and you have the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer installed as a printer, you can create a .TIF (image) file that you can then send as a fax from the Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) program. The Office Document Image Writer is installed by default when you install Office 2003.

To convert an unsupported file to a .TIF (image) file

  1. Open the file you want to fax.
  2. On the File menu, click Print.
  3. In the Name list in the Print dialog box, click Microsoft Office Document Image Writer.
  4. To configure MODI to print a TIF file format, click Properties.
  5. In the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
  6. Under Output format, select the TIFF - Monochrome Fax option, and then click OK.
  7. In the Print dialog box, click OK.
  8. In the Save as dialog box, select the View Document Image check box (if it isn't already), and any other options you want, and then click Save. The document is now converted to a TIF and is open in MODI

To fax your TIF file

  1. On the File menu, point to Send To, and then click Recipient using Internet Fax Service.
  2. If you've signed up for a fax service provider, skip to step 5. The first time you use fax services, you will be prompted to sign up with a provider. Click OK to open your Web browser, and then follow the signup instructions on the Web site.
  3. Close your Web browser, return to MODI, and repeat step 1.
  4. A fax mail envelope opens with your TIF file attached. Complete the Fax Recipient, Fax Number, and Subject fields.
  5. In the Fax Service task pane, choose the options you want, and then complete the To and Subject fields on your cover sheet to ensure your fax reaches the intended recipients.
  6. Click Send.
