Using Office HTML Filter to save space on Web servers

Applies to
Microsoft Office 2003
Microsoft Office 2002 and 2000

Microsoft Office HTML files contain Office-specific markup in addition to standard HTML and cascading style sheet markup. The Office-specific markup fully preserves Rich Text Format and page layout so that you can edit the .htm version of a Web page without losing features used to originally create the page.

If you don't need to edit Office-specific features in the HTML version of pages created in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, you can use Office HTML Filter to remove Office-specific markup. For example, you can easily convert Word documents or Excel worksheets to .htm file format to copy to your company's intranet, and then save server space by using Office HTML Filter to reduce file size.

Download the Office HTML Filter from Microsoft Office Online.

Tip   Instead of writing complicated HTML tags to create nested tables, simply draw them directly on the page by using the Draw Table tool in Word. Then select the tables and, on the Edit menu, click Copy as HTML to create a compact HTML copy of the tables. Paste the copy into Notepad or the HTML editor you normally work with, and then complete the page layout.

What Office HTML Filter does

Office HTML Filter removes Office-specific markup — such as document properties, document settings, and conditional formatting — without affecting how Web pages look in browsers.

You also have the option to delete the following nonessential supporting files that will not be visible in the browser:

  • Header.htm
  • Filelist.xml
  • Oledata.mso
  • Editdata.mso
  • Preview.wmf
  • *.emz
  • *.png

For more information about how the filter creates smaller .htm files, read Using Office HTML Filter to remove Office-specific markup.

How to use Office HTML Filter

After you download and install Office HTML Filter, you can use it to filter single or multiple files saved in .htm file format.

Use Office HTML Filter

  1. On the taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office HTML Filter.
  2. To add files to the Files to process list, click Add in the Office HTML Filter dialog box.
  3. To remove any files from the Files to process list, select them, and then click Remove.
  4. To select options to process files in .htm format, click Options.
  5. Click Apply when you have made your selections.

Note  To learn more about documents in .doc, .rtf, .txt, and .htm file format, read Use Office HTML Filter to create Web pages that download faster. Note the filter is not available from within Excel.
