Gathering information from several different sources can be a difficult task. However, if you are using Office 2000, you can easily collect text and graphics from documents in different Office programs and then paste the items into a single document. You can paste the items in the document one at a time or all at once.
For example, you can copy a chart in Microsoft Excel, switch to Microsoft PowerPoint® and copy a bulleted list, switch to Microsoft Internet Explorer and copy a page of text, and then switch to Microsoft Word and paste the collection of copied items.
When you collect items from documents in different Office programs, the items are stored on the Office Clipboard, a temporary storage area.
Collecting and pasting multiple items
The new Clipboard toolbar in Office 2000 makes it easy for you to use the Office Clipboard to collect and paste items.

Tips on using the Office Clipboard
- The Clipboard toolbar remains visible when you switch to other Office programs, but disappears when you are in a view where the Copy, Cut, and Paste commands are unavailable, or if you are working in a program not included in Office 2000.
- You can copy items while using any program that provides copy and cut functionality; however, you can only paste items into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Outlook®.
Customizing the Office Clipboard
You can't customize the Clipboard toolbar. However, Office 2000 provides options you can customize that affect moving and copying text with the Office Clipboard.
For example, you can use the following procedure to set Office Clipboard options in Word 2000.
- On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Edit tab.
- Select from the following options:
If you want to use the INSERT key to insert the contents of the Office Clipboard into a document, select the Use the INS key for paste check box.
If you want to remove extraneous spaces that remain after you cut or paste text, select the Use smart cut and paste check box.
