Office 2000 (SR-1a) Update Step-by-Step Installation Instructions

12 May 2000

These instructions provide a step-by-step process for installing the Office 2000 Service Release 1a (SR-1a) Update. For additional information, see Office 2000 Service Release (SR-1a) Frequently Asked Questions. If you are using Office 2000 in an organization, and you are not an IT professional, please check with your IT administrator before updating your system.

The SR-1a update is approximately 26-40 MB and takes approximately two to three hours to download with a 28.8 modem. The size of the update depends on whether you're running a single application or the entire Office 2000 Premium suite. To ensure the integrity of your Office 2000 installation, the SR-1a Update requires access to the Office 2000 CD or your network installation location during the installation process.

The Office 2000 SR-1a update includes the original Office 2000 SR-1 update and the Office 2000 SR-1/Windows 2000 Utility: Registry Repair. The functionality of this utility is the only addition to the SR-1a update. If you have already installed the SR-1 update and have not upgraded from Windows NT 4 to Windows 2000, you do not need this utility. If you have upgraded from Windows NT 4 to Windows 2000 and have already installed the SR-1 update, you should only install the Office 2000/Windows 2000 Repair Utility. All other users should install the SR-1a update. To determine if the SR-1a update is installed on your computer, please see "OFF2000: How to Determine Which Version of the SR-1 Update Is Installed."

You may want to print these instructions and close all applications before installing the Office 2000 SR-1a Update.

We recommend that users install the latest version of Windows Installer before installing the SR-1a update. Most Windows 2000 users do not require the Windows Installer update. Windows 98 and Windows 95 users can download Windows Installer 1.1 for Windows 98 and Windows 95 and Windows NT4.0 users can download Windows Installer 1.1 for Windows NT 4.0.

Please note: The installation process for SR-1a will not indicate that SR-1a is installing. The installation dialog remains SR-1. To determine if the SR-1a update is installed on your computer, please see "OFF2000: How to Determine Which Version of the SR-1 Update Is Installed."
