Use a Scan Converter to Videotape Your Presentation

Just a reminder: before advancing to the steps outlined in this section, you should have prepared your presentation for a TV screen by completing the steps outlined in the previous sections of this article.

A scan converter is a device that converts the VGA or SVGA signal that the video adapter on your computer produces into an NTSC signal that a television or home videocassette recorder (VCR) can understand. There are numerous models, brands, and qualities of scan converters on the market.

The following instructions outline how to record your PowerPoint® presentation (now prepared for television) onto videotape using a scan converter.

  1. Install your scan converter using the instructions that came with it.
If your presentation contains sound, make sure that your computer has a sound card, and use the scan converter instructions to set up for sound.
  2. Start your computer presentation and let it sit on the initial black frame.
  3. Insert in a new high-quality videotape in your VCR, and press the Record button.
  4. As a transition to the presentation, record 10 seconds of black frame before beginning your presentation.
  5. Start your presentation.
  6. At the end of your presentation, record 30 seconds of black frame before stopping the VCR.
