Add animated effects to a PowerPoint 97/2000 presentation

You can create eye-catching effects that impress your audience and grab attention by using animation features in PowerPoint 97/2000. An effective way to enhance every slide is to add an animated object to the slide master. For example, as you display each slide, a picture could come into view gradually via an animation effect such as Checkerboard, Swivel, or Zoom.

To make an object appear on every slide

  1. On the View menu, point to Master, and then click Slide Master.
  2. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click one of the following:
    • ClipArt   Click the category of picture you want, and then click a picture. To add the picture to the slide, click Insert Clip at the bottom of the shortcut menu. Then, close the dialog box.
    • From File   Locate the folder that contains the picture you want to insert. Click the picture you want, and then use the arrow on the Insert button to chose Insert or Link to File.
  3. Drag the picture to position it on the slide master.

Note  You can also add an animated GIF picture. In the ClipArt Gallery, you'll find these on the Motion Clips tab. To see how each one animates, click Preview Clip on the shortcut menu. (Animated GIFs are a series of pictures combined to form an animation; they are not movies. However, you can also insert a movie into a slide.) If you add an animated GIF to a slide, choose one that has a small file size; otherwise, the performance of the animation may be inconsistent.

To make a picture appear via an animated effect

  1. On the slide master, right-click the picture you want, and then click Custom Animation.
  2. Under Check to animate slide objects, select the check box for the picture you want to affect.
  3. On the Effects tab, under Entry animation and sound, select an effect. (To see what an effect looks like, click Preview.)
  4. On the Order and Timing tab, under Start Animation, click one of the following:
    • On mouse click During a slide show, clicking the slide turns on the animation (or you can press PageDown).
    • Automatically   The animation starts as soon as the slide appears during a slide show. Or, you can enter a number of seconds that should elapse between one animated object and the current one.
  5. Click OK.
  6. To test the animation and timing, on the Slide Show menu, click View Show.

Tip   If the slide master contains more than one animated object, you can specify the order in which objects play. On the Order and Timing tab, under Animation order, click the picture object, and then click an arrow to move the object up or down in the list.
