Have you ever considered that you would have a lot more room to work with on your computer if you could just install what you need at the time you need it? With Office 2000 Setup, you have the ability to choose which Office features are installed at setup, and which are installed only upon first use.
Customizing Your Office Installation
When you choose the Customize option during setup, you have the opportunity to determine how features will be installed. Click the plus sign next to a feature and then click the drop-down arrow to see if it is installed by default and how its subfeatures are installed. You can change how a feature is installed. While some features and their subfeatures all have the same installation method, some have mixed installation methods, which means that you can choose to have a feature installed without some of it subfeatures.
Ways to Install Office 2000
When you run Office from either a network server or from CD, you can choose to run features from there rather than having them installed on your hard drive. Let's say you are installing from a network server. Depending on how your system administrator configures installation, you can choose to keep certain features on the network and run them from there rather than installing them on your hard drive. Similarly, if you are installing from a CD, you can choose to run some features from the CD rather than installing them on your hard drive.
Installing on First Use
You can also choose not to install a feature until you need to use it the first time. Let's say that when you first installed Office 2000 you decided that Clip Gallery should be installed on first use. Now you are creating a document that needs some clip art. When you choose Picture from the Insert menu and click Clip Art, you'll get a dialog box asking you if you want to install it. When you click Yes, the Windows Installer tells you that it is installing Clip Gallery to your hard disk drive.
