Move AutoCorrect entries between computers in Word

Applies to
Microsoft Word 2002

If the list of built-in AutoCorrect entries on your computer doesn't contain the corrections that you want to automatically detect and correct, such as typos, misspelled words, and incorrect capitalization, you can add entries to the list. If you want to use the entries you create on another computer with Microsoft Office or Word installed, you can move a copy of the list from one computer to another.

Word includes a template, Support.dot, that contains macros you can use to create a backup copy of the list on the source computer and to move the copied list to the destination computer.

Notes

  • Although the backup copy of the list is created in Word, all AutoCorrect entries used in any Office XP program are copied in this process.
  • AutoCorrect entries on the destination computer are replaced by AutoCorrect entries on the source computer if both entries have the same names.

Installing Support.dot

Support.dot is not installed by default when you perform a typical installation of Office or Word. Therefore, to use the macros contained in the template to move AutoCorrect entries, you first need to install it on both the source computer and the destination computer.

  1. In the Microsoft Office Setup Wizard, click the plus sign (+) next to Microsoft Word for Windows, and then click the plus sign (+) next to Wizards and Templates.

Note  For more information about installing or removing individual components, see the Help in your Office XP program.

  2. Click the arrow next to More Templates and Macros, and then click Run from My Computer.
  3. Click Update.

Copying the list of AutoCorrect entries

  1. On the source computer you want to copy the list from, locate and open the file Support.dot, which should be located in the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Macros folder.
  2. If the Security Warning dialog box appears, select the Always trust macros from this source check box, and then click Enable Macros.

Note  When your security is set to low, you will not receive a prompt or signature validator and the macros are automatically enabled. You should only use this setting if you are certain that all macros in your files are from trusted sources.

  3. After reading the instructions contained in the template, scroll down to the table of macros, click AutoCorrect Backup, and then in the AutoCorrect Utility dialog box, click Backup.
  4. In the Save in list, select the location you want to save the new document to, and then click Save.

Note  You may want to save the document to a network folder that you can access from both the source computer and the destination computer.

  5. In the AutoCorrect Utility dialog box, click Cancel, and then click Close on the File menu.

Moving a copy of the AutoCorrect entries

  1. On the destination computer, which is the computer you want to move a copy of the entries to, locate and open the file Support.dot, which should be located in the Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Macros folder.

  3. After reading the instructions contained in the template, scroll down to the table of macros, click AutoCorrect Backup, and then in the AutoCorrect Utilities dialog box, click Restore.
  4. Click Yes to continue when you see a message that current AutoCorrect entries will be replaced with entries from the backup document that contain the same name.
  5. Locate and open the Word document that contains the copy of AutoCorrect entries created on the source computer.
  6. Click OK after Word finishes copying the AutoCorrect entries.
  7. In the AutoCorrect Utility dialog box, click Cancel, and then click Close on the File menu.
The AutoCorrect entries from the source computer are now available on the destination computer.
