- In Page view, at the bottom of the document window, click Design
. - Do one or both of the following:
Highlight text with color
- Select the letter, word, or block of text that you want to highlight with color.
- On the Formatting toolbar, click the arrow for Highlight Color
, and then select the color you want.
Shade text with color
- Select the text that you want to shade with color.
- On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
- Click the Shading tab and do one or more of the following:
Set a background color for the selected text
Set the color of the selected text

Select a color in the Foreground color box.
Note The shading applies to the entire line on which the selected text appears. However, you can resize the colored background by clicking on the background and then dragging the sizing handles.
