Error Messages

Question: Why won't FrontPage start and why does it keep crashing on me?
Applies to: FrontPage 2000 and 2002
Answer: There are three things that might cause this behavior:
  • Corrupted preference file   Do a search for cmdUI.prf and delete the file.

    When you do this, any custom toolbars you had will be lost and you'll need to re-create them.

  • Corrupted meta data   You can fix this by doing a search on your hard drive for all .web files and deleting them.
  • Corrupted Registry key   
    1. In Windows XP, on the Start menu, click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type
      RegEdit
      .
    3. Find and delete the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSSoftwareMicrosoftFrontPage

 Warning   Editing the registry can cause your system to become unstable. Before deleting or changing registry entries you should backup your registry first. To do this, from within RegEdit, choose Registry, and then Export Registry File.

Additionally, you should regularly clear out your FrontPage TEMP directory to ensure optimal performance.

Forms

Question: How do I enable users to send a form by e-mail?
Applies to: FrontPage 2002 and 2003
Answer:

Each time a site visitor submits a form, a message containing the results of the form is sent to the e-mail address you specify. You can also configure other options for the messages, such as the text for the Subject line and the address for the From (Reply To) line.

Important

  1. In Page view, at the bottom of the document window, click Design Button image.
  2. Right-click the form, and then click Form Properties.
  3. Click Send to.
  4. In the E-mail address box, type the e-mail address to which you want to send the form results.
  5. If you do not want results saved to a file in addition to being sent in e-mail, clear the File name box, and then click Options.
  6. Click the E-mail Results tab.
  7. Then do one or more of the following:
    • In the E-mail format list, click the text format you want.
    • To specify the subject line of the e-mail message, under E-mail message header in the Subject line box, type the text that you want. If you leave this box blank, the default subject line in the e-mail will be "Form Results."
    • If you want the subject line of the e-mail message to contain the results of one field from your form, next to Subject line select the Form field name, check box, and then type the name of the field in the Subject line box.
    • If you want a specific e-mail address to appear as the sender of the e-mail message (the From or Reply To line in the e-mail), type that address in the Reply-to line box.
    • If your form contains a field that collects the site visitor's e-mail address, you can use that address as the sender's address. Next to Reply-to line, select the Form field name, check box, and then in the Reply-to line box, type the name of the form field.

FrontPage Server Extensions

Question: How do I set up my server to send email when using FrontPage forms?
Applies to: FrontPage 2002, FrontPage 2000, FrontPage 98
Internet Information Server 5.1; Internet Information Server 5.0; Internet Information Server 4.0
Answer: In order to send email from a FrontPage form you need to configure the FrontPage Server Extensions to send email.

In Internet Information Server (IIS), do the following:

  1. Right-click on your Web site and then click Properties.
  2. Click on the Server Extensions tab.

In FrontPage 2002, do the following:

  1. Click on Settings.
  2. Your browser will launch and the Change Configuration Settings web-based administration form will appear.
  3. Enter in your SMTP mail server and the email address that will appear as the From and Reply To addresses when a form is submitted.
  4. Click Submit.
In FrontPage 2000 and FrontPage 98:
  1. Select the option to specify how email should be sent.
  2. Enter in your SMTP mail server and the email address that will appear as the From and Reply To addresses when a form is submitted.
  3. Click Ok.

Hit Counter

Question: How do I create a custom image for the FrontPage hit counter?
Applies to: FrontPage 2002, FrontPage 2000, FrontPage 98
Answer: To create a custom image for the FrontPage hit counter, follow these steps:
  1. Open any image editing program that is capable of saving files as .GIF images, such as Microsoft Image composer.
  2. Create an image that is 200 pixels wide and 40 pixels high.
  3. Evenly place text for the numbers 0 through 9 from left to right.

    If your image editor program has the ability to place a grid on the image, you may want to use this feature to better align the text. In this example, the graphic for each number is 20 pixels wide. The numbers should be lined up as follows: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

    After you are satisfied with the look and alignment of your image, save the image as a .GIF image. Use the file name Counter.gif.

 Note   The hit counter works only with .GIF images.

After you create the image, import the image into your FrontPage Web site. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open your Web in FrontPage.
  2. In Folders view, make sure that your images folder is the open folder. If it is not, click the folder in the All Folders pane to open it.
  3. On the File menu, click Import.
  4. In the "Import" dialog box, click Add File.
  5. In the "Add File to Import List" dialog box, locate the Counter.gif file on your hard disk, select the file, and click Open.
  6. In the "Import File to FrontPage Web" dialog box, click OK. The file has been imported to your Web; however, you must add a counter to your page.

     Note   The hit counter works only with .GIF images.

Question: How do I import the custom hit counter image into my FrontPage Web site?
Applies to: FrontPage 2002, FrontPage 2000, FrontPage 98
Answer: After you have created a custom image, you can import it into your FrontPage Web site by doing the following:
  1. Open your Web site in FrontPage.
  2. In Folders view, open the Images folder by clicking the folder in the All Folders pane to open it.
  3. On the File menu, click Import.
  4. In the Import dialog box, click Add File.
  5. In the Add File to Import List dialog box, locate the Counter.gif file on your hard drive, select the file, and then click Open.
  6. In the Import File to FrontPage Web dialog box, click OK.

    While you have imported the the file, you still must add the hit counter to your Web page.
