Publish files and folders to an FTP server

 Important   If you attempt to change a page directly on an FTP-based server, the Publish Web site option in Remote Web Site view will appear dimmed and is unavailable. To publish files and folders in a Web site to a Web server that supports File Transfer Protocol (FTP) (FTP: A communication protocol that makes it possible for a user to transfer files between remote locations on a network. This protocol also allows users to use FTP commands, such as listing files and folders, to work with files on a remote location.), you must open and save a copy of the site to your local computer, and then publish the updated files and folders to the server.

  1. On the File menu, click Open Site.
  2. In the Open Site dialog box, type a path or browse to the folder that contains your Web site.
  3. Click Open.
  4. If the Web site that you are opening is not a Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Web site, you will be prompted to add FrontPage information to the folder.

  • In the Add FrontPage Information to the Folder dialog box, click Yes.
  1. Change the Web site as required.
  2. On the File menu, click Save.
  3. On the View menu, click Remote Web Site.
  4. Do the following:

  1. At the top of the document window, click Remote Web Site Properties.
  2. On the Remote Web Site tab, under Remote Web server type, click FTP.
  3. In the Remote Web site location box, type the address, including the FTP protocol, of the remote Web site that you want to publish folders and files to — for example, ftp://example.com — or click Browse to locate the site.
  4. If you want to view a specific folder when you connect to the site, in the FTP directory box, type the path to the folder — for example, www/images.
  5. If the server that hosts the remote Web site uses a different port (port: One of the network input/output channels of a computer running TCP/IP. On the World Wide Web, it usually refers to the port number a server is running on. One computer can have many Web servers running on it, but only one server can run on a port.) each time you publish files and folders to the site, select the Use Passive FTP check box.
  6. Do any of the following:
    • To remove specific types of code from Web pages as they are being published, on the Optimize HTML tab, select the options you want.
    • To change the default options for publishing, on the Publishing tab, select the options you want.
  7. Click OK.

ShowVerify and add file name extensions to transfer as ASCII

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the FTP tab.
  3. If the file name extension for the type of file that you plan to publish is not in the list, under New Extension, type the file name extension, and then click Add.

 Note   If the file name extension for a file type does not appear in the list, FrontPage publishes files of that type in binary format.

ShowMark files that you do not want to publish

  • In the Local Web site pane, right-click each file that you do not want to publish, and then click Don't Publish.
  1. Publish files and folders to a Web server that supports FTP.

ShowHow?

  1. On the View menu, click Remote Web Site.
  2. In Remote Web Site view, under Publish all changed pages, click Local to remote.
  3. Click Publish Web site.

 Note   If you stop a publish in progress, files that have already been published will remain on the remote Web site.
