By default, drag-and-drop editing is turned on so you can drag the mouse to move and copy cells. This option can be turned off.

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. On the Edit tab, do one of the following:
   • To turn off drag-and-drop editing, clear the Allow cell drag and drop check box.
   • To turn on drag-and-drop editing, select the Allow cell drag and drop check box.

   Tip   To avoid replacing existing data in other cells when you drag cells, make sure that the Alert before overwriting cells check box is selected.

Notes

• With the Allow cell drag and drop option selected, you can drag to move or copy cells.

  To move a cell or range of cells, position the mouse on a cell or cell range border so that the mouse pointer changes to a move pointer , and then drag the cell to another location.

  To copy a cell or range of cells, hold down CTRL while you position the mouse on a cell or cell range border so that the mouse pointer changes to a copy pointer , and then drag the cell or range of cells to another location.

• With the Allow cell drag and drop option selected, you can also drag the fill handle (fill handle: The small black square in the lower-right corner of the selection. When you point to the fill handle, the pointer changes to a black cross.) to copy data or to fill adjacent cells with a series of data.
