Row height and column width limits in Excel

Applies to
Microsoft Excel 2003

Maximum number of rows and columns

A Microsoft Office Excel worksheet contains 65,536 rows and 256 columns. You cannot increase the number of rows or columns beyond the maximum row and column limits.

For information about specification limits in worksheets, workbooks, workgroups, calculations, PivotTable reports, and charts, see Excel specifications and limits.

Limit the number of rows and columns that are displayed

When you do not want users to use or view all of the rows and columns in a worksheet, you can hide unwanted rows and columns by selecting the rows or columns that you do not want to display by clicking Row or Column on the Format menu, and then by clicking Hide. For more information, see Hide or display rows and columns.

Optionally, you can prevent users from displaying hidden rows or columns by clicking Protection on the Tools menu, and then by clicking Protect Sheet. If you want to protect the worksheet or workbook by using a password, type a password, and then click OK. For more information about protecting worksheet or workbook elements, including how to allow specific users to make changes to protected elements, see Protect worksheet or workbook elements.

Maximum row height and column width

The maximum row height for an individual row is 409 points (1 point equals approximately 1/72 inch). The maximum column width for an individual cell is 255 characters. This value represents the number of characters that can be displayed in a cell that is formatted with the standard font (standard font: The default text font for worksheets. The standard font determines the default font for the Normal cell style.).

Limit the row height and column width

There may be times when you want to set specific row heights or column widths, for example, when you create a form that has uniformly sized rows or columns.

You can enter a row height of 0 (zero) to 409. If the row height is set to 0, the row is hidden. You can enter a column width of 0 (zero) to 255 characters. If the column width is set to 0, the column is hidden.

You can set the row height or column width by selecting the rows or columns, by clicking Row or Column on the Format menu, and then by clicking Height or Width. Type the row height or the column width. For more information about changing row heights and column widths, see Change the column width and row height.

To prevent other users from changing the row heights and column widths, click Protection on the Tools menu, and then click Protect Sheet. For more information about protecting worksheet or workbook elements, including how to allow specific users to make changes to protected elements, see Protect worksheet or workbook elements.
