Get to know Excel 2007: Enter formulas

Using the MAX function

To find the largest value in a range, click in cell F7 and then:
Callout 1 On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click the arrow on the Sum button, and then click Max in the list.
Callout 2 Press ENTER to display the result in cell F7.

The MAX function finds the largest number in a range of numbers, and the MIN function finds the smallest number in a range.

The example uses a set of values that you haven't seen before.

The picture shows how to find the largest value in the set. You click in cell F7, click the arrow on the Sum button in the Editing group on the Home tab, click Max in the list, and press ENTER. The formula =MAX(F3:F6) appears in the formula bar near the top of the worksheet.

The largest value is 131.95.

To find the smallest value in the range, you would click Min in the list and press ENTER. The formula =MIN(F3:F6) would appear in the formula bar.

The smallest value in the series is 131.75.

You could also type each formula directly into a cell.
