Change the way data is plotted in a chart

You can change the order, placement, and worksheet orientation of data series (data series: Related data points that are plotted in a chart. Each data series in a chart has a unique color or pattern and is represented in the chart legend. You can plot one or more data series in a chart. Pie charts have only one data series.) in a chart.

ShowPlot data series from worksheet rows or columns

  1. Click the chart.
  2. On the Chart menu, click Source Data, and then click the Data Range tab.
  3. Click Series in rows or Series in columns.

ShowPlot one or more data series on a secondary value axis

When the range of values for different data series (data series: Related data points that are plotted in a chart. Each data series in a chart has a unique color or pattern and is represented in the chart legend. You can plot one or more data series in a chart. Pie charts have only one data series.) in a 2-D chart varies widely, or when you have mixed types of data (such as price and volume), you can plot one or more data series on a secondary value axis (value axis: A chart axis that displays scaled numerical values.) (y-axis). The scale of the secondary axis reflects the values for the associated series.

  1. Click the data series you want to plot along a secondary value axis.
  2. On the Format menu, click Selected Data Series, and then click the Axis tab.

Note   Selected Data Series is only available on the Format menu when a data series is selected.

  1. Click Secondary axis.

Tip    To help distinguish the secondary axis, you can change the chart type for just one data series. Select the data series and then, on the Chart toolbar, click the arrow next to the Chart Type button and then select a new type (such as Line Chart or Bar Chart).

ShowReverse the plotting order of categories, values, or series

You can reverse the plotting order of categories or values for most charts, as well as of data series (data series: Related data points that are plotted in a chart. Each data series in a chart has a unique color or pattern and is represented in the chart legend. You can plot one or more data series in a chart. Pie charts have only one data series.) for 3-D charts with a third axis. You cannot reverse the plotting order of values in a radar chart.

  1. Click the axis for the categories, values, or series whose plotting order you want to change.
  2. On the Format menu, click Selected Axis, and then click the Scale tab.

Note   Selected Axis is only available on the Format menu when a data series is selected.

  1. To reverse the plotting order, do one of the following:
    • For categories, select the Categories in reverse order check box.
    • For values, select the Values in reverse order check box.
    • For series in 3-D charts, select the Series in reverse order check box.

ShowControl the way empty cells are plotted in a chart

  1. Click the chart.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Chart tab.
  3. Under Plot empty cells as, click the option you want.

ShowChange the points plotted in a Pie of Pie or Bar of Pie chart

When you choose the Pie of Pie or Bar of Pie chart type when you create a chart, you can change the way the points are plotted.

  1. Click a slice in the pie chart you want to change.
  2. On the Format menu, click Selected Data Point, and then click the Options tab.

Note   Selected Data Point is only available on the Format menu when a data point (data points: Individual values plotted in a chart and represented by bars, columns, lines, pie or doughnut slices, dots, and various other shapes called data markers. Data markers of the same color constitute a data series.) is selected.

  1. Select the options you want.

Tip    You can also change which slices appear in the Pie of Pie or Bar of Pie chart by dragging. Click a slice or bar segment on the main chart, and then drag it to the Pie of Pie or Bar of Pie chart, or vice versa.

ShowChange the plotting order of data series

3D charts with series in different orders

  1. Click a data series (data series: Related data points that are plotted in a chart. Each data series in a chart has a unique color or pattern and is represented in the chart legend. You can plot one or more data series in a chart. Pie charts have only one data series.) in the chart you want to change.

To change the plotting order of data series in a surface chart, click a legend key (legend keys: Symbols in legends that show the patterns and colors assigned to the data series (or categories) in a chart. Legend keys appear to the left of legend entries. Formatting a legend key also formats the data marker that's associated with it.).

  1. On the Format menu, click Selected Data Series or Selected Legend Key, and then click the Series Order tab.

Note   Selected Data Series or Selected Legend Key is only available on the Format menu when a data series or legend is selected.

  1. In the Series order box, click the series you want to move.
  2. To place the series in the order you want, click Move Up or Move Down.

Tip    You can also use this procedure to change the order in which data series are displayed in a stacked chart.
