Change the spacing between data markers in bar and column charts

  1. Click a data series (data series: Related data points that are plotted in a chart. Each data series in a chart has a unique color or pattern and is represented in the chart legend. You can plot one or more data series in a chart. Pie charts have only one data series.) in the chart you want to change. You need to select only a single data series to change the overlap or spacing of all data series of the same chart type.
  2. On the Format menu, click Selected Data Series, and then click the Options tab.
  3. To change the overlap of the data markers (data marker: A bar, area, dot, slice, or other symbol in a chart that represents a single data point or value that originates from a worksheet cell. Related data markers in a chart constitute a data series.) in each category, enter a value between -100 and 100 in the Overlap box. The higher the value, the greater the overlap within the category.

To change the spacing between categories of data markers, enter a value between 0 (zero) and 500 in the Gap width box. The higher the value, the greater the distance between each category.
