PivotTable Wizard: What's changed in Access 2002

Applies to
Microsoft Office Access 2003
Microsoft Access 2002

The PivotTableĀ® Wizard in Access 2000 and earlier creates a form that allows you to rearrange row, column, and page fields to facilitate data analysis. The wizard in Access 2002 and later also creates a form that supports pivoting, but there are some fundamental differences in the way it works when compared to versions of Access 2000 or earlier.

PivotTable Wizard in Access 2000 and earlier PivotTable Wizard in Access 2002 and later
The wizard creates a form by embedding a Microsoft Excel object. The wizard creates an Access form that is based on the Microsoft Office PivotTable Component. The form's default view is set to PivotTable view.
You customize the form in Excel. You customize the form in Access.

The PivotTable Wizard in Access 2002 or later has the following improvements over the earlier version of the wizard:

  • Because the form is based on a PivotTable list, you can take advantage of PivotTable list functionality without leaving Access. You can move, sort, filter, and group data in many different ways.
  • The wizard opens the form in PivotTable view, but you can switch to Datasheet view or Form view and look at data in different ways.
  • Because the PivotTable view's object model is well integrated with the Access object model, it is easier to manipulate a form's PivotTable view programmatically.
