When you see a database in use, you are probably seeing controls. Boxes for viewing or entering data, captions telling users which boxes to use, text providing instructions and explanation—all these are controls. So are the lines and rectangles organizing other elements visually. And so is the command button that submits data to another computer, and the button that closes a form.
When you design or customize a form, report, or data access page, much of its appearance and behavior will depend on the controls you include in it. The first thing you need to know is how to add the controls that will make your database convenient, reliable, and pleasant to use.
