On July 15, 2010, the Indian government announced that it is adopting a new currency symbol for the Indian Rupee. The new symbol is in addition to the original rupee symbol which is still in use in various other countries. The new symbol can be found on the government’s Ministry of Finance site here: http://india.gov.in/knowindia/currency_symbols.php.
The Indian Ministry of IT has worked with the Unicode standards group to include this new symbol in Unicode 6.0 and will be releasing further information on supporting the new symbol on keyboards soon.
Microsoft is working with the Ministry of IT to fully understand the requirements of this new symbol, and is taking steps to implement support for the new Rupee symbol across our product lines.
Microsoft shares the goal of the Ministry of IT and the Indian government to have the new Rupee symbol available for use as soon as possible.
