How to publish Web sites with FTP

Server with its FTP host name and an FTP directory

In this illustration, ftp.example.com is the FTP host name, and public_html is the FTP directory. The FTP directory is the publishing destination for your files.

The FTP directory is the specific name of the folder to which you publish your Web pages. Here are some classic examples of what they might be:

  • public_html
  • yourname/web

Once they are published there, people can see them when browsing the World Wide Web.

Important    If your hosting company doesn't specify an FTP directory, then you don't need to specify one when publishing. Also note that your hosting company may refer to the FTP directory as an "FTP host directory."
