Open XML II: Editing Documents in the XML

Easily remove one part of a ZIP file

One important benefit of Open XML Format documents is that they are compartmentalized. If a problem occurs in one part, you can often simply remove that part and the rest of the document remains intact.

In most cases, when editing a single document, removing a document part is quicker and easier to accomplish through the applicable Office 2007 program. For example, to delete all comments from a Word 2007 document, on the Review tab, in the Comments group, click to expand Delete options and then click Delete All Comments in Document.

However, when troubleshooting a document, the ability to remove a part without having to open the document may save time and make the document easier to manage. Additionally, understanding the relationship between document parts in a ZIP package can help you more easily tackle new Open XML tasks that you encounter when editing your own ZIP packages.
