Table of Contents II: Customize your TOC

Table of contents in book
Learn how to change the appearance of your table of contents (TOC) and include custom titles and headings in your TOC.

About this course

This course includes:

  • Three self-paced lessons and three practice sessions for hands-on experience. Practices require Word 2007.
  • A short test at the end of each lesson; tests are not scored.
  • A Quick Reference Card you can take away from the course.

Goals

After completing this course you will be able to:

  • Format a TOC to get it looking the way you want.
  • Include custom chapter titles and headings in your TOC.
  • Include outline levels in your TOC.

Before you begin

If you are not familiar with how to create a table of contents, start with the first course, Table of Contents I: Create an automatic TOC.

If you want to learn about the fields that are behind the scenes in an automatic TOC and learn how to create more than one TOC in a document, see Table of Contents III: Use fields to create a TOC and create multiple TOCs.

You know how to create a table of contents, now jazz it up a bit. For example, your document headings are blue, and now you want your TOC to be blue also. This lesson will show you how to do it.

And if your document has custom styles for chapter titles and headings, and you need to include them into a TOC, it just takes a couple of clicks to add them.

To learn more about this course, read the text in Goals and About this course, or look at the table of contents. Then click Next to start the first lesson.
