Troubleshoot Visio templates downloaded from the Web
Why don't I see the shapes, menus, title bars, or other things I need?
A menu I need is missing
Automation events may be turned off. To turn Automation events on - On the Visio Tools menu, click Options. Click the Security tab. Select Enable Automation events, and then click OK.
Shapes, menus, title bars, and other things I need are missing
You may not have some components installed on your computer because: You have the Standard version of Visio and the template you downloaded requires the Professional version.
To see what version of Visio you have installed - On the Visio Help menu, click About Microsoft Office Visio. At the top of the dialog box, it will say either Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003 or Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2003.
To find out if the template you downloaded requires Visio Professional - With the template open, click the Using This Template link at the top of the task pane on the right. (If you don't see the task pane, on the View menu click Task Pane.) If the template requires Visio Professional, the first sentence under the topic title will say Visio Professional only.
Tips When you first installed Visio you chose not to install them.
To install missing components - Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Add or Remove Programs.
- Under Currently installed programs, click Microsoft Office Visio 2003, and then click Change.
- Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
- Under Choose update options for applications and tools, click the plus sign next to Microsoft Office Visio. Click the plus sign next to Solutions. Click the down arrow to the left of each solution you want to install, and then click Run from my Computer.
Tip Solutions are categories of templates, so install the solution that is likely to include templates similar to the one you downloaded. For example, if you downloaded a Cause and Effect Diagram template and some of its components were missing, choose to install the Flowcharts and Business Process solution. - When you are finished indicating the solutions you want to install, click Update.
New shapes I drop on the page are not the same size as the existing shapes.
The measurement units used in the template you downloaded are different from the units used in shapes installed on your computer. For example, you downloaded a template that uses Metric units and the shapes installed on your computer use US units.
If you don't mind working with shapes that differ slightly in size, the drawing will function properly. If you want your shapes to match exactly, however, you can: Download a different template
To find a template that uses the same units as the shapes installed on your computer - Note the units (Metric or US units) in the title bars of the stencils (green areas on the left side of the drawing window) that opened with the template you originally downloaded.
- Go to Microsoft Office Online Templates. Locate the template you originally downloaded, and then install the one that uses the same units as your shapes.
Tip Units for each template are listed in parentheses after the template's name.

Why does the stencil title bar say US units when I downloaded a Metric template?
Because Metric shapes are not installed on your computer, the US units shapes opened instead. The drawing will still function properly, but the dimensions of new shapes you drop on the page will be in US units, so they may be slightly different sizes from the Metric shapes already on the page. Tip To see a shape's dimensions, right-click the shape, and then click Properties.
