Open XML II: Editing Documents in the XML

Edit with an XML ZIP package

As you gain experience of editing content in an Open XML Format ZIP package, you may be amazed at how much time and effort you can save on a variety of document tasks by working directly in the XML.

If you can edit text and formatting by just opening the document, how do you benefit from learning how to edit text and formatting in a document’s XML?

Once you understand the way that content is structured in the document parts of an Open XML Format ZIP package, you can easily scan through a document’s XML to quickly locate formatting issues for faster troubleshooting. You can also edit content that is not editable from within Word, Excel, or PowerPoint (such as deleting the name of the most recent document editor without changing any other settings). You can quickly update content (such as replacing a logo that appears throughout a long document). And you can even customize formatting with settings not available from within the 2007 Office system programs.

The goal of this lesson is to use some basic editing tasks to begin to get comfortable working in an Open XML Format ZIP package.
