An animation on how to check out a file.
To check out a file for use in Word 2007, Excel 2007, or PowerPoint 2007, you place your pointer over the file name, click the down arrow that appears, and then click Check Out. Then you edit the file by clicking its name. When you eventually close the file, you'll be prompted to check it in.
