Crawling the Site Directory in a Shared Services Configuration

If your server farm is configured for shared services, you can associate a portal site with the search scope for another portal site. Search results on the associated portal site will include the contents of the first portal site, including content for sites in the site directory.

  1. On the Site Settings page, in the Search Settings and Indexed Content section, click Use search scope from another portal site.
  2. On the Associate Portal Site page, click Associate this portal to the following portal.
  3. Type the URL of the portal site with which you want to associate this portal site, and click OK.

After you have associated one portal site with another portal site, the site directory content source for the associated portal site will also crawl the sites on the site directory for the first portal site. You can associate the site directory content for the first site with a content source group on the second site and create a search scope for that source group. This allows you to federate all of the portal sites in your shared services configuration so that you can scope searches to each individual portal site from the portal site providing search services for the server farm.
