Manage sites
 

Users with the proper rights can create and manage SharePoint sites from the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal site.

Sites are managed from the Site Directory. All of the sites created since the creation of the portal are listed in the Site Directory. From the Site Directory, you can search for existing sites, create sites, or add links to existing sites.

You can select one of three views for the portal site. For more information about the other views, see Using views in the Site Directory.

From the Manage Sites view, you can approve or reject site links, ask to be alerted when site links change, or delete site links.

ShowSwitch to the Manage Sites view of the Site Directory

  1. On the navigation bar, click Sites to view the Site Directory.
  2. In the Select a View list, click Manage Sites.

ShowView sites

  • Do one of the following:
    • In the Site Directory list, click the name of the site.
    • On the Site Listing Properties page, click the link provided.

ShowView and edit site links

  1. Rest the pointer on the site listing that you want to view, click the arrow that appears, and then click View Item.
  2. The Site Link Properties page appears. You can perform the management tasks for the link on this page, or you can click Go Back to List to return to the full list in the Manage Sites view.

  3. To edit the site link, click Edit Item.
  4. On the page used to edit site links , you can change any of the properties of the site link that were set when the link was added. For more information about these properties, see Add a link to a site.
  5. To attach files that are relevant to the site, on the toolbar, click Attach file, and then type the location of the file that you want to attach. You can also click Browse to select a file. Click OK.

ShowDelete site listings

  1. Rest the pointer on the site link that you want to delete, click the arrow that appears, and then click Delete Item.
  2. Note  You can also delete items by clicking Delete on the toolbar of the pages used to view and edit site links.

ShowAlert me when a site link changes

  1. Rest the pointer on the site link that you want to view, click the arrow that appears, and then click Alert Me .
  2. Note  You can also ask to be alerted to changes for this site link by clicking Alert Me on the toolbar of the Site Link Properties page. For more information about alerts, see About alerts.

ShowApprove and reject sites

Site links added by administrators are approved by default. Site links added by other users are set to Pending and must be approved or rejected.

  1. Rest the pointer on the site link that you want to view, click the arrow that appears, and then click Approve/reject.
  2. On the page that appears, in the Approval Status section, click the approval status that you want for this item.
    • Click Approved to approve an item. Approved items show up in the Site Directory for all users.
    • Click Rejected to reject an item. Rejected items are not shown in the Site Directory, but users who know the URL can still view the site. Rejected items are not deleted.
    • Click Pending to submit a previously approved or rejected site link for approval. Anyone with the proper rights can approve or reject a link.
  3. In the Comment section, type comments explaining the reason for the change in status for this site link.

Note  You can also approve or reject site links by clicking Approve/reject Item on the toolbar of the Site Link Properties page or the page for editing site links.
