How to buy the Enterprise Project Management Solution

The Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management (EPM) Solution is an end-to-end collaborative project and portfolio management environment that helps your organization gain visibility, insight, and control by enhancing decision making, improving alignment with the business strategy, maximizing resource utilization as well as measuring and increasing operational efficiency. The EPM Solution enables effective communication and collaboration within project teams. The EPM Solution’s extensible, enterprise-scale architecture helps enable effective integration with other line-of-business (LOB) solutions and Office system applications.

The table below highlights the core products that comprise the EPM Solution, as well as required enabling technologies and recommended complementary products that an enterprise should consider.

Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007 This desktop client to the EPM Solution helps enable users to stay informed, control project work, schedules, and finances, keep project teams aligned, while becoming more productive through integration with familiar Microsoft Office system programs, powerful reporting options, as well as guided planning, wizards and templates. Each licensed copy includes one Project Server 2007 Client Access License (CAL). Requires Project Server 2007 for enterprise project management functionality.
Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 Project Server 2007 provides the core services for the EPM Solution. It helps enable users to centralize and standardize information on work and resources from across their entire organization which enables analysis and reporting to facilitate management, accelerate time to market and improve quality. Project Server is enterprise-ready and customizable with its comprehensive API and support for workflow. You can acquire additional Project Server 2007 CALs through Open Licensing, Select Licensing, and Enterprise Agreements.

Requires Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for hosting and function of Windows Server System. Requires Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for enterprise project management functionality.
Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 Client Access License (CAL) Project Server 2007 Client Access Licenses (CALs) are required for each device or user that accesses the features and services of Project Server 2007, for example to use the thin Web client Project Web Access, Project Web Parts in SharePoint, or connecting customized client interfaces.

The CAL enables Project Web Access, the web client to the EPM Solution, which enables users to view, analyze and report on information including timesheets as well as create project proposals and activity plans. This also includes the administrative user interface.

Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 External Connector The Project Server 2007 External Connector is an optional product for the EPM Solution that permits non-employees such as partners to collaborate on projects. If you would like to allow your business partners or customers to access your network, you have two licensing options:

  • Acquire Windows CALs for each of your external users.
  • Acquire External Connector (EC) licenses for each server that will be accessed by your external users.

An external user is a person who is not an employee, or similar personnel of the company or its affiliates, and is not someone to whom you provide hosted services using the server software.
Microsoft Office Project Portfolio Server 2007 Project Portfolio Server 2007 is a top down portfolio management solution that helps organizations identify, select, manage, and deliver portfolios that align with their business strategy. Office Project Portfolio Server 2007 is a key component of the EPM Solution and helps ensure that you gain visibility, insight, and control across your project, program, and application portfolios. This includes a bi-directional link with Project Server 2007. You can acquire additional Project Portfolio Server 2007 CALs through Open Licensing, Select Licensing, and Enterprise Agreements.

Requires Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for hosting and function of Windows Server System. Requires Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for enterprise project management functionality.
Microsoft Office Project Portfolio Server 2007 Client Access License (CAL) Project Portfolio Web Access is a web client used to access the information stored in Project Portfolio Server 2007. Using Project Portfolio Web Access requires a Project Portfolio Server 2007 Client Access License (CAL). Project Portfolio Web Access provides users with access to the following modules:

  • Portfolio Builder
  • Portfolio Optimizer
  • Portfolio Dashboard

Microsoft Office Project Portfolio Server 2007 External Connector This optional license is an alternative to CALs for an unlimited number of business partners or customers to access Project Portfolio Server 2007. If you would like to allow your business partners or customers to access your network, you have two licensing options:

  • Acquire Windows CALs for each of your external users.
  • Acquire External Connector (EC) licenses for each server that will be accessed by your external users.

An external user is a person who is not an employee, or similar personnel of the company or its affiliates, and is not someone to whom you provide hosted services using the server software.

 Note   Project Portfolio Server 2007 and its CALs can be purchased and deployed on their own and do not have any dependencies on Project Server 2007 or the other core products within the EPM Solution. To gain a true end-to-end project portfolio management solution, customers should deploy Project Portfolio Server 2007 in conjunction with Project Server 2007 and Project Professional 2007.

Microsoft Windows Server operating system Project Server 2007 and Project Portfolio Server 2007 require Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later, Windows 2000 Advanced Server with SP3 or later, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, or Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Component of Windows Server that is required for using Project Web Access. Microsoft SQL Server Project Server 2007 uses a back-end database server: SQL Server 2000 SP4.

Project Portfolio Server 2007 uses a back-end database server: SQL Server 2005 SP1 or higher.
