To constrain an object so that it moves only horizontally or vertically, hold down SHIFT while you drag the object.
If objects won't move where you want them to, the Snap objects to grid option may be selected (View menu, Grids and Guides command). This option, which is on by default, aligns objects to the nearest intersection of the grid (grid: A set of intersecting lines used to align objects.) as you move them.
To temporarily turn this option off, hold down ALT while you drag the object.
