Descriptions of new SmartArt graphics

You can download the following new layouts for SmartArt graphics from Microsoft Office Online.

Layout name Description Picture

Architecture

Use to show hierarchical relationships that build from the bottom up. This layout works well for showing architectural components or objects that build on other objects.

Chevron Accent Process

Use to show sequential steps in a task, process, or workflow, or to emphasize movement or direction. Works best with minimal Level 1 and Level 2 text.

Interconnected Rings

Use to show overlapping or interconnected ideas or concepts. The first seven lines of Level 1 text correspond with a circle. Unused text does not appear, but remains available if you switch layouts.

Picture Organization Chart

Use to show hierarchical information or reporting relationships in an organization, with corresponding pictures. The assistant shape and the Org Chart hanging layouts are available with this layout.

Tabbed Arc

Use to show a set of related items arcing over a common area. Best with small amounts of text.

Varying Width List

Use for emphasizing items of different weights. Good for large amount of Level 1 text. The width of each shape is independently determined based on its text.

Use to show grouped blocks of information. Works well with large amounts of Level 2 text.

Use your new SmartArt graphic layouts

Which 2007 Microsoft Office system program are you using?


Excel

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Open Excel.
    • If an Office program is open, close it, and then reopen it to see your new SmartArt graphic layouts.
  2. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click SmartArt.
  3. In the Choose a SmartArt Graphic Layout gallery, click the SmartArt graphic layout that you downloaded, and then click OK.

Outlook

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Open Outlook.
    • If an Office program is open, close it, and then reopen it to see your new SmartArt graphic layouts.
  2. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click SmartArt.
  3. In the Choose a SmartArt Graphic Layout gallery, click the SmartArt graphic layout that you downloaded, and then click OK.

    The Insert tab is available in an e-mail message. Also, the cursor must be in the body of the e-mail message for the SmartArt button in the Illustrations group to be available.

PowerPoint

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Open PowerPoint.
    • If an Office program is open, close it, and then reopen it to see your new SmartArt graphic layouts.
  2. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click SmartArt.
  3. In the Choose a SmartArt Graphic Layout gallery, click the SmartArt graphic layout that you downloaded, and then click OK.

Word

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Open Word.

  2. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click SmartArt.
  3. In the Choose a SmartArt Graphic Layout gallery, click the SmartArt graphic layout that you downloaded, and then click OK.

Replace the layout of an existing SmartArt graphic with a downloaded layout

You can switch the layout used in an existing SmartArt graphic with one of the new SmartArt graphic layouts that you downloaded.

  1. Click the SmartArt graphic with the layout that you want to replace with a downloaded layout.
  2. Under SmartArt Tools, on the Design tab, in the Layouts group, click More Button image , and then click More Layouts.

    If you don't see the SmartArt Tools or Design tabs, make sure that you've selected a SmartArt graphic.

  3. In the Choose a SmartArt Graphic Layout gallery, click the SmartArt graphic layout that you downloaded, and then click OK.

    When you change layouts, most of your text and other content, colors, styles, effects, and text formatting are automatically carried over to the new layout. For more information about changing layouts, see Switch the layout or type of a SmartArt graphic.
