The small print: headers and footers

Miniature slide with footer areas highlighted
The small print that goes at the top or bottom of slides and printouts, known in Microsoft PowerPoint® as header and footer text, can be important — and sometimes tricky to get right. Learn how to place slide or page numbers, dates, and other text on slides, handouts, notes, and outlines.

About this course

This course includes:

  • One self-paced lesson and one practice session for hands-on experience.
  • A short test at the end of the lesson; the test is not scored.
  • A Quick Reference Card you can take away from the course.

After completing this course you will be able to:

  • Put the small print you want on slides, including date and time, slide numbers, and text.
  • Put the small print you want on handouts, notes, and outlines, including date and time, page numbers, and text.
  • Change the formatting of a header or footer and apply the change to all slides.
  • Get tips for special situations.

What might seem straightforward at first can get complicated: You want slide numbers to show on your handout, but you don't want page numbers on the handout pages. You'd like "Confidential" to show once per handout page, but not on every slide.

How do you set all this up?

This course steers you through the choices for putting slide or page numbers, the date and time, and other small text on slides and printouts. Get tips for unique situations, too.
