Fraud alert: E-mail messages claim to be updates from Microsoft

You might receive a fraudulent e-mail message that targets Outlook users by falsely claiming that it is an official message from Microsoft. Examples of these messages include the following:

  • A message that claims to contain information about a critical update for Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express (KB910721).
  • A message that requests you to reconfigure your e-mail account by clicking a link or requests your e-mail account username, password, or mail server name.

Warning   Both messages are not from Microsoft. They contain links to malicious software or attempt to trick you into providing personal information. Do not click any link in the message. Delete the message.

Microsoft or anyone representing the Outlook product and support teams will never ask for your personal information, including e-mail account usernames or passwords, in an e-mail message.

Always remember the following precautions

  • Do not click the link in any suspicious message. Any update issued for Microsoft Office, including Outlook, are available directly on the Microsoft Web site at www.windowsupdate.com.
  • Never enter your personal information, such as passwords, on a Web site that you open directly from a message.
  • Do not click attachments or links in e-mail messages unless you completely trust the source of the message.
  • Keep the Junk E-mail filters up to date. The easiest way to do this is to use Windows Update. In Windows, click Start, click Programs or All Programs, and then click Windows Update or Microsoft Update. You can also open your Web browser and go to www.windowsupdate.com.

By following these tips, you can help prevent becoming a victim of malicious e-mail messages and scams.
