Some features in Outlook require you to use a Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account. Exchange Server is an e-mail-based collaborative communications server for businesses. Licenses for Exchange can be purchased from Microsoft and its resellers.
If your organization uses an Exchange server, but you do not know if you have an account or how to use it, you must contact your organization’s help desk or network administrator for account assistance.
Home users typically do not have an Exchange Server e-mail account; instead they use a POP3 e-mail account with an Internet service provider (ISP) or use a Web-based e-mail service. If you use a POP3 e-mail account, your ISP can provide you with your specific account information. People without Exchange Server accounts cannot use the features in Outlook that require an Exchange Server.
The Help for these features will include one of the following notations:
- This feature requires you to use a Microsoft Exchange account. Most home and personal accounts do not use Exchange.
- This feature requires you to use a Microsoft Exchange 2003 or later account. Most home and personal accounts do not use Exchange.
This feature requires you to use a Microsoft Exchange account in Cached Exchange Mode. Most home and personal accounts do not use Exchange.
If you are not using an Exchange Server e-mail account, you may not see the menus, commands, or options mentioned in the Help for the feature.
What type of e-mail accounts are in your Outlook profile?
You can check the E-mail Accounts dialog box in Outlook to discover which types of e-mail accounts you have in your Outlook profile.
- On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
- Select View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
- Under Outlook processes e-mail for the following accounts in the following order, the Type column lists the type of account for each entry.
Note Some features may require specific versions of Microsoft Exchange Server. See the procedures for learning what version of Microsoft Exchange Server you connect to in Help.
The Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account lists a type of Exchange and is the default account to be used when sending e-mail messages.
An HTTP account.
The mail.contoso.com e-mail account is an IMAP account represented as type IMAP/SMTP.
A POP3 account, such as pop3.litwareinc.com, is listed as a type POP/SMTP.
