You can import content into Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 from documents and other files by using the Microsoft Office Document Imaging Format (MDI) (Microsoft Office Document Imaging Format (MDI): A high resolution, tag-based graphics format, based on the Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) used for digital graphics.). Much like the high-resolution Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) (Tagged Image File Format (TIFF): A high-resolution, tag-based graphics format. TIFF is used for the universal interchange of digital graphics.), MDI is a graphics file format designed to store formatted documents as images. After you insert the documents into OneNote, you can annotate and print the imported content as part of your typed and handwritten notes.
- On the Insert menu, click Document as Picture.
- In the Choose Document to Insert dialog box, double-click the document or file that you want to insert.

Tip
If you want to insert information into OneNote from a type of file that is not supported by MDI, you can use the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer print driver that is included with MDI to achieve the same result. For example, if you want to insert content from an HTML file into OneNote, you can open the HTML file in Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 and print it by selecting Microsoft Office Document Image Writer as the printer name in the Print dialog box. When you print to Microsoft Office Document Image Writer, the information is not sent to your printer. Instead, a special print driver is used to create a TIFF graphics file that you can then insert into OneNote or use in other programs.
To insert graphics instead of documents in OneNote, click Document as Picture on the Insert menu, click Graphic Files in the Files of type box, browse to the folder where the image file is stored, and then double-click the file that you want to insert.
