Let's save and open a document

Let's save a document

Let's save a document that we have created and edited in Word. In Word, when you interrupt your work or quit, you must "Save" or you will lose your work. When you "Save", the document is saved as a "file" on your computer. Later, you can open the file, modify it and print it.

Let's save a document using the following steps.

  1. Click the Save button (Save button).

    Click the Save button in the Quick Access toolbar.

  2. Specify the location where you want to save the document.

    Specify the location where you want to save the document in the Save in box. The previously selected My Documents folder is displayed here.

    The first line of text in the document is pre-filled in as the file name in the File name box.

    To change the file name, type in a new file name.

    Click Save.

  3. The document is saved as a "file".

    The file name in the Title Bar changes from "Document1" to the saved file name.

  4. Check the location where the file was saved.

    Click the Start button (Start button), and then click My Documents.

    Let's check that the saved file is in the My Documents folder.

Tip: Characters that cannot be used in file names

Let's open a document

Let's open the file you just saved. Opening the file lets you resume your work.

Let's open the document file using the following steps.

  1. Click the Start button (Start button), and then click My Documents.

    Select My Documents

    The saved file is in the My Documents folder.

  2. Double-click the file.

    The Word startup screen appears, and then the document is displayed.

Tip: You can also use the Office Button's Open

Doctor When you click Word's Office Button (Office Button), the Open command is in the menu that appears. You can use Open to open a document.
  1. Click the Office Button (Office Button), and then click Open.

  2. Select the document you want to open, and then click Open.

Tip: You can also open documents you have saved recently from "History"

Doctor When you click Word's Office Button (Office Button), a list of files recently saved using Word appears in the lower part of the displayed menu as "History". You can select a file from this "History" list, and open it.

Click Office Button (Office Button), and then select the document file that you want to open from the "History" list.
