Make Halloween word searches using Word

Applies to
Microsoft Word 2002

If you want a fun and easy party activity that you can create yourself, try using the Tables feature in Word to create word search puzzles at a fraction of the cost of regular puzzle books. You can use your own words to personalize the puzzle, or as in the example below, you can make your very own holiday party puzzle (such as for Halloween) by throwing in the names of your family and friends for fun. You can vary the number of rows and columns you want in your puzzle.

To create a word search puzzle

  1. Open a new document in Word.
  2. On the Table menu, select Insert and click Table. This will open the Insert Table dialog box.
  3. In the Table size area, type in 25 for both the amount of rows and columns.
  4. In the Autofit behavior area, select Autofit to contents and click OK.
  5. Create a list of words that you want to use. This is the key for the players, telling them which words are hidden.
  6. Press the CAPS LOCK key on your keyboard. Letters are easier to read if they are capitalized.
  7. Add approximately 20 words and/or names to the table, one letter per cell for the cells that you fill in.

  1. Randomly fill in the remaining spaces (to hide the words you entered in the table).
  2. On the File menu, click Print. Make several copies, and pass them out for everyone to enjoy.

Tips

  • Use one letter for two different words going in different directions. It will make the puzzle more interesting.
  • Change the amount of rows and columns to make the puzzle bigger or smaller.
  • Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to advance from cell to cell in the table. This makes the task of filling in letters go much faster.
