Custom template is not listed in the New dialog box

A custom template is available in the New dialog box (File menu) in Microsoft Excel if you save the template file in one of the following locations:

  • The Templates folder, or a subfolder in the Templates folder, which is usually:

    C:\OS\Profiles\User_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

    Where OS is the operating system folder (for example, the Windows folder), and User_name is your user name.

  • The XLStart folder, which is usually:

    C:\OS\Profiles\User_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart

    Where OS is the operating system folder (for example, the Windows folder), and User_name is your user name.

  • The location you specified in the Alternate startup file location box on the General tab in the Options dialog box (Tools menu).
