Features that are built into PhotoDraw

Applies to
Microsoft PhotoDraw® 2000 Version 2

Like the rest of Microsoft Office 2000, PhotoDraw provides accessibility features that are built right into the program. These features are available to all users, and most are available via the keyboard alone. This overview contains the following sections:

  • Quick guide to accessibility features in PhotoDraw
  • Detailed descriptions of accessibility features in PhotoDraw
  • PhotoDraw features that require the use of a mouse

Quick guide to accessibility features in PhotoDraw

You can use the following table as a quick reference to the new, improved, and existing accessibility features in PhotoDraw 2000 Version 2.

Feature Description
New File view Like Microsoft Office 2000, the latest version of PhotoDraw introduces a new file view in which users can view 50% more files in the Open dialog box with less visual clutter. A shortcut menu provided in this dialog box, which includes a History folder and My Documents folder, gives users with disabilities access to pictures with fewer keystrokes.
New Personalized menus PhotoDraw menus automatically adapt so that when first opened, a menu shows only those commands that are used frequently. This reduces the keystrokes that are necessary to access frequently used menu items
New Format Painter tool Users with mobility impairments can use the Format Painter tool to instantly copy multiple effects.
Improved Keyboard shortcuts Keyboard shortcuts give users with mobility impairments an alternative to using the mouse; they also greatly reduce the number of steps necessary to perform tasks.
Improved Zoom options Zoom capability to 600% makes it easier for users who have visual impairments to view their pictures.
Color options Users can customize the color of certain screen elements so that they are easier to distinguish.
Large toolbar icons Increased icon size makes it easier for users with certain types of mobility impairments to position their mouse. Also, users who have low vision may find it easier to see and use icons that are larger than usual.
IntelliMouse support Support for the Microsoft IntelliMouse pointing device allows users to use their mouse to zoom and scroll.
Large Font mode This feature allows users with low vision to increase the size of the font used on menus, in dialog boxes, and in other places on the screen.
High Contrast mode Users with low vision can use the system-wide High Contrast mode to distinguish elements on the screen more easily.
Microsoft Clip Gallery Because features in Clip Gallery can be accessed via the keyboard, they are more accessible to users who have difficulty using the mouse.
HTML Help In PhotoDraw, users can use hyperlinks to move through Help, which makes it more navigable for those who are blind or have low vision.

Detailed descriptions of accessibility features in PhotoDraw

Like the rest of Office 2000, PhotoDraw provides many accessibility features that are built right into the program. These features are available to all users, and most are available via the keyboard alone. Below is a quick description of each of the features.

File view

PhotoDraw introduces a new File view that increases access to files through the Open dialog box by means of the Places Bar. The Places Bar includes features such as a History folder, which contains links to the last 20 to 50 files on which a user has worked, as well as a Personal folder, which provides quick access to frequently used files. This helps users with mobility impairments by reducing the number of keystrokes required to access documents.

Personalized menus

As with other Office programs, the latest version of PhotoDraw includes "adaptive" menus. When users first start PhotoDraw, the menus display basic commands. As users work with PhotoDraw, only the commands that they use most often will appear on menus. Because PhotoDraw streamlines the menus, those with mobility impairments require less interaction with PhotoDraw to accomplish their tasks, and screen readers function better with less screen clutter for those users who are blind or have low vision. Personalized menus also help users with cognitive disorders by only showing them the features that they use frequently. This feature can be turned on and off through the following steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. If the Toolbars tab is hidden, press CTRL+TAB to display it.
  3. Press the TAB key to focus on the Menus show recently used commands first check box.
  4. Press SPACEBAR to select or clear this check box.
  5. Press the TAB key to highlight the OK button.
  6. Press ENTER to close the Options dialog box.

Format Painter tool

Users can use the new Format Painter tool on the Standard toolbar to quickly copy formatting - including fills, outlines, and most effects - from one object to another. This tool helps those with mobility impairments by significantly reducing the number of keystrokes necessary to create a particular effect.

Keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts give users who are blind, have low vision, or are mobility-impaired an alternative to using the mouse for accessing various features as well as using menus and toolbars. PhotoDraw provides keyboard support for most common tasks and keyboard access to most features, either via access keys or via the TAB key. This allows users to set focus for controls and to execute commands.

The keyboard interface for PhotoDraw is fully documented in online Help. To view a list of keyboard shortcuts, follow these steps:

  1. On the Help menu, click Contents and Index.
  2. If the Answer Wizard tab is hidden, press ALT+A to display it.
  3. In the What would you like to do? box, enter the word keyboard, and then press ALT+S to display the Use keyboard shortcuts topic.

When a user shows ScreenTips (also known as ToolTips), she can specify that PhotoDraw also display a shortcut key combination for the toolbar button. To display shortcut keys in ScreenTips, do the following:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. If the Toolbars tab is hidden, press CTRL+TAB to display it.
  3. Press the TAB key to highlight the Show shortcut keys in ScreenTips check box.
  4. Press SPACEBAR to select the check box.
  5. Press the TAB key to highlight the OK button.
  6. Press ENTER to close the Options dialog box.

Zoom options

Users with low vision can zoom in on their picture so that it's easier to see on the screen. To zoom in or out on a picture by using the keyboard, follow these steps:

  1. Press ALT to highlight the menu bar.
  2. Press CTRL+TAB twice to move to the Standard toolbar.
  3. Use the RIGHT ARROW key to move to the Zoom list.
  4. Use the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys to move through the Zoom list, and then select a zoom percentage.

As an alternative, users can zoom in or out by using the options in the Pan and Zoom window. To show the window, click Pan and Zoom on the View menu.

  2. Press the TAB key to move to the color box.
  3. Use the arrow keys to select a new color for the background.
  4. Press ENTER to change the background color.

Large toolbar icons

Increasing the size of toolbar icons provides mobility-impaired users with an increased hit range for selecting with their mouse. Using large icons also benefits users who have limited vision. To increase the size of toolbar icons in PhotoDraw, follow these steps:

  2. If the Toolbars tab is hidden, press CTRL+TAB to display it.
  3. Press the TAB key until the Large icon check box is highlighted.

  5. Press the TAB key to highlight the OK button.
  6. Press ENTER to close the Options dialog box.

Microsoft IntelliMouse pointing device support

Support for the Microsoft IntelliMouse pointing device allows users to scroll and zoom by using a wheel button on the mouse. By default, rotating the wheel button will scroll instead of zoom in the PhotoDraw workspace. To reverse this behavior, follow the steps below:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. If the General tab is hidden, press CTRL+TAB to display it.
  3. Press the TAB key to move to the In workspace, use IntelliMouse® wheel to option that you want to change.
  4. Use the LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW key to select a new behavior for the wheel.
  5. Press the TAB key to highlight the OK button.
  6. Press ENTER to close the Options dialog box.

Large Font mode

PhotoDraw 2000 includes support for large fonts. These fonts are available when a user selects High Contrast mode, or can be set independently. Through Microsoft Windows Control Panel, users can select preset font sizes or choose customized font sizes.

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select the Display icon.
  4. Select the Settings tab.
  5. Press the TAB key to highlight the Advanced button.
  6. Press ENTER to view the dialog box.

  8. Press the TAB key to highlight the OK button.
  9. Press ENTER to close the dialog box.

Note  The steps above vary slightly for Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0. To use large fonts in Windows NT, select Large Fonts from the Font Size box on the Settings tab.

High Contrast support

High Contrast is a systemwide setting that increases legibility for users with low vision. To view PhotoDraw menus, toolbars, and other user interface elements in High Contrast mode, follow these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select the Accessibility Options icon.
  4. Select the Display tab.
  5. Press SPACEBAR to select the Use High Contrast check box.
  6. Press the TAB key to highlight the OK button.
  7. Press ENTER to close the Accessibilities Properties dialog box.

Note  The steps above vary slightly for Windows NT version 4.0. To use High Contrast in Windows NT, select the Display icon in Control Panel, and then select the Appearance tab. In the Scheme list, select one of the high-contrast color schemes.

Clip Gallery support

Clip Gallery 5.0 allows screen readers to read ScreenTips, clip captions, and other text that has focus. Clip Gallery uses a natural language query to search for clips, and screen readers can read the automatic Spelling Check for the query. However, not all text may be read automatically. Some screen readers have options that have to be turned on.

HTML Help

Users can customize their view of Help in PhotoDraw by using the Microsoft Internet Explorer accessibility options, which give them full control over formatting such as font styles, sizes, and colors. They can also turn off the display of images in lieu of text. Users will also benefit from being able to navigate in the same fashion through the Help topics as they do within Internet Explorer. To enable these accessibility features while in Internet Explorer:

  1. On the View menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Accessibility button.
  3. Press the DOWN ARROW key to move the focus to the relevant Formatting check boxes.
  4. Press SPACEBAR to select the check box.
